About Anthony Yeboah

Anthony Yeboah was born on 6 June 1966 in Kumasi, Ghana's second city and the heartland of the Ashanti Region. Known widely as Tony Yeboah, he moved to West Germany in the late 1980s and became one of the most feared and celebrated strikers of the 1990s, renowned not only for his prolific scoring but for the explosive, technically devastating quality of his goals. Yeboah began his European career at 1. FC Saarbrücken, scoring 26 goals in 65 appearances and attracting the attention of bigger clubs. Eintracht Frankfurt signed him and it was there that he became a genuine Bundesliga force. Over 123 appearances for Frankfurt he scored 68 goals, winning the Bundesliga top scorer award in both the 1992-93 and 1993-94 seasons. His combination of pace, physical power, and technique made him one of the most complete forwards in the German game during that era. In January 1995, Leeds United brought him to the Premier League for a fee of around 3.4 million pounds. What followed transformed him into a permanent fixture in football highlight reels. During the 1995-96 season he produced two goals of extraordinary quality: a thunderous half-volley against Liverpool at Elland Road on 21 August 1995, which cracked in off the underside of the crossbar, and weeks later a similarly devastating volley in a 4-2 win at Wimbledon. Both goals competed for Premier League Goal of the Season and the Liverpool strike is still regularly cited among the finest in the competition's history. He finished his time at Leeds with 32 goals in 66 appearances and was voted the club's Player of the Year, the first non-British player to receive the honour at Elland Road. A difficult relationship with incoming manager George Graham led to his departure in 1997. He joined Hamburger SV, where he scored 28 goals in 100 appearances, before finishing his European career at Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia. He retired from professional football in 2002. For Ghana's Black Stars he earned 59 caps and scored 29 goals, representing Ghana at three Africa Cup of Nations during the 1990s. After retirement he scouted for Hamburg, served as chairman of Berekum Chelsea in the Ghanaian Premier League, and co-founded the Anthony Yeboah SportPromotion agency. He is remembered in Leeds as one of the club's greatest-ever players.
