He was born in Wiamoase, Ashanti Region, on 2 February 1962. He began trading in Dunkwa-on-Offin, selling cassettes, feeding bottles and padlocks, then moved to Lagos with friends. When Ghanaians left Nigeria in 1983 he came home with a cassette player and a chainsaw; his timber venture ended when a falling tree smashed the saw on his first trip, so he went back to selling cassettes.
Despite Group
He founded Peace FM at Achimota in 1999, and its Akan-language programming drew listeners away from English stations. Hello FM in Kumasi, Okay FM in Accra and peacefmonline.com followed. The Despite Group of Companies now also takes in United Television, U2 salt, Neat Foods, Atona Foods, Best Point Savings and Loans, Despite Stores, farming, construction and a car museum. He received a GH Captain's Award in 2019. He has a wife and nine children; his eldest son, Kennedy Osei Asante, is general manager of Despite Media.
