Pearl Nkrumah

Pearl Nkrumah serves as Board Chair of the Ghana Stock Exchange, the country's principal securities exchange and the institutional foundation of Ghana's capital markets. In her role as chair, she occupies the highest governance position at an institution whose development, integrity, and operational effectiveness are foundational to how Ghana mobilises long-term investment capital, provides investors with opportunities to allocate their savings productively, and develops the financial market depth that a growing economy requires.

The Ghana Stock Exchange was established in 1989 and began trading in 1990, and over more than three decades it has grown from a nascent market with a handful of listings to a more developed exchange with a diverse mix of equities, corporate bonds, and government securities. As Board Chair, Nkrumah leads the governance of an institution that has pursued an ambitious agenda of market development, including efforts to attract new company listings, deepen market liquidity, develop new financial instruments, and position Accra as a competitive regional financial centre.

Capital markets development is a long-horizon governance challenge. The depth and liquidity of a securities market develop over years and decades, shaped by the quality of regulation, the reliability of market infrastructure, the availability of institutional investors, and the broader economic environment. Board chairs of exchanges who bring patient, strategic governance to this agenda contribute to outcomes that may not be fully visible within a single term but that compound over time into the deep capital markets that advanced economies possess and that Ghana is working to develop.

Nkrumah's chairship of the Ghana Stock Exchange represents one of the most senior governance positions held by a woman in Ghana's financial sector. Her recognition in the 2026 Avance Media Top 100 Women Board Directors ranking, which found that women board chairs increased from 10 in 2023 to 19 in 2026, places her among this growing cohort of women leading Ghanaian institutional governance at its highest level.

Her work at the Ghana Stock Exchange connects her to the governance of the infrastructure through which Ghana's companies access public capital and through which investors participate in the growth of Ghana's corporate sector, one of the most consequential governance roles in the country's financial system.
