Prof. Nana Ama Browne Klutse

Climate scientist Prof. Nana Ama Browne Klutse was elected a vice-chair of the IPCC's Working Group I in July 2023. President Mahama made her acting chief executive of the Environmental Protection Agency on 18 January 2025.

Background

Born at Nyanfeku Ekroful in the Central Region on 23 May 1981, she went to Anomabo Methodist Primary and JHS and Mfantsiman Girls' Secondary School. She read physics at the University of Cape Coast and earned a PhD in climatology at the University of Cape Town.

Science

Her research is on West African climate, particularly the monsoon. She was a lead author of the IPCC's Sixth Assessment Report and holds a climate fellowship with AIMS, the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences. She has headed the University of Ghana's physics department, managed its Remote Sensing and Climate Centre, spent 2016 to 2018 as a senior researcher at the Atomic Energy Commission's space science institute, and lectured at WASCAL. She encourages girls to take up science and is a member of the NDC. In 2026 she was named among Avance Media's top 100 women board directors in Ghana.
