Albert Kwabena Dwumfour

Albert Kwabena Dwumfour is a Ghanaian journalist and communications executive who has been President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) since June 2022. Members re-elected him for a second term in June 2025 with more than 60 per cent of the vote, and he also sits on the steering committee of the Federation of African Journalists.

Before the presidency

Dwumfour studied at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration. He worked in corporate communications, rising to Head of Corporate Affairs at the Tobinco Group, the Accra-based pharmaceutical company. Inside the GJA he served as National Organising Secretary, the post that gave him a network among members across the regions.

Winning the GJA

At the association's elections on 24 June 2022 he ran for president against Gayheart Mensah and Dave Agbenu. Of 556 valid votes he took 233, ahead of Mensah on 181 and Agbenu on 142. He succeeded Affail Monney, who had led the association for two terms.

His re-election on 30 June 2025 was far more comfortable, and was widely read as an endorsement of his first term.

Press freedom and galamsey

Dwumfour's time in office has been dominated by the safety of journalists. He has spoken out repeatedly against attacks on reporters, including those covering illegal mining, known in Ghana as galamsey. His strong stance on galamsey reporting has brought him into open disagreement with some security and government officials.

He launched a public campaign, "See Something, Say Something to a Journalist", urging citizens to bring evidence of wrongdoing to the media. He also regularly tells members to put accuracy and balance ahead of speed and social media clicks, and to follow the GJA Code of Ethics. The veteran editor Kwesi Pratt Jnr has called him a "shining star" of the profession.

Regional role and recognition

In March 2024 he was elected to the steering committee of the Federation of African Journalists, giving the GJA a voice in continental press freedom work. The Church of Pentecost is among the bodies that have honoured him for his leadership of the association.
