Bright Simons

Bright Simons is a Ghanaian technologist, social innovator and policy analyst who serves as Vice President of the IMANI Centre for Policy and Education, one of West Africa's most influential think tanks. Widely followed for his data-driven commentary on governance, economics and technology, he has become a leading independent voice in African public policy debate.

Simons received his secondary education at Presbyterian Boys' Senior High School at Legon before winning a scholarship to study astrophysics at Durham University in the United Kingdom. His early interest in science eventually merged with a passion for solving practical problems, and he emerged as an entrepreneur determined to apply technology to social challenges across the developing world.

He is best known as the founder and president of mPedigree, an organisation he created to combat the trade in counterfeit medicines. The system he pioneered allows ordinary consumers to verify the authenticity of pharmaceutical and other products instantly and free of charge by sending a simple text message, using unique codes printed on packaging. The innovation spread beyond Ghana to markets across Africa and Asia, tackling a problem that costs lives and undermines public health, and it established Simons as a globally recognised figure in social enterprise.

His work has attracted a series of prestigious honours. He was named a TED Fellow in 2009, and in 2012 the World Economic Forum recognised him as a Young Global Leader while designating the mPedigree Network a technology pioneer. In 2013 the MIT Technology Review included him among its top thirty-five innovators under thirty-five for his contributions in telecommunications. In 2025 he was again listed among New African magazine's one hundred most influential Africans, underscoring the durability of his reputation.

At IMANI Africa, where he leads research, Simons has become a prolific analyst and commentator, dissecting government contracts, fiscal decisions and technology policy with a level of technical detail that has earned him respect across ideological lines.
