William John Donkoh

William John Donkoh is a Ghanaian goalkeeper who plays for Elmina Sharks in the Access Bank Division One League, wearing the number 40 shirt. In October 2026 he lost his left leg after a motorbike accident in Cape Coast, two days after keeping a clean sheet for the club.

Donkoh is one of the goalkeepers at Elmina Sharks, the Central Region club based at the Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom Sports Stadium. On Sunday, 18 October 2026 he played in the Division One League home match against Future Stars and kept a clean sheet.

Accident and amputation

On Tuesday, 20 October 2026, after the team's morning recovery session, Donkoh rode a motorbike to check on workers he had hired for a job that was still unfinished. According to the club's Public Relations Officer, Kingsley Smith Arthur, eyewitnesses said the motorbike collided head-on with a tricycle on the road leading to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.

He was taken to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital with severe injuries to his left leg. Doctors operated on the night of Wednesday, 21 October, but could not save the limb, and the leg was amputated.

Club support

Elmina Sharks announced the amputation in a statement on Thursday, 22 October 2026, calling it one of the saddest moments in the club's history. The club said it would stand with him and his family through his recovery and that he remains part of the Sharks family. It also pledged to keep paying his salary for the remaining two years of his contract, and asked the public for prayers and for privacy for the family.
