About Isaac Adongo

Isaac Adongo is a Ghanaian economist, accountant, and politician who has represented the Bolgatanga Central Constituency in the Upper East Region in parliament for the National Democratic Congress since January 2017. A trained chartered accountant with a sharp focus on public finance, he quickly established himself as one of parliament's most technically rigorous voices on economic matters and has served as the NDC's principal parliamentary critic of government fiscal policy. Born on 12 October 1972 in Bolgatanga, Adongo holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Ghana, Legon, and is a qualified member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants Ghana. Before entering politics he built his career in the private sector as a financial consultant and auditor, accumulating hands-on experience in public finance that would later give credibility to his parliamentary interventions. In parliament, Adongo served as Ranking Member on the Finance Committee during the Akufo-Addo administration, placing him at the centre of legislative scrutiny over government budgets, borrowing, and fiscal management. He became one of the most cited opposition voices during Ghana's economic crisis years, consistently challenging the government's debt accumulation, the Bank of Ghana's financing of fiscal deficits, and the handling of the banking sector cleanup. He raised pointed questions about the legality of printing over GHS 80 billion to cover government shortfalls, framing it as an unprecedented breach of central bank independence. Adongo attracted wide attention in 2022 when he described Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia as Ghana's economic Maguire, drawing a comparison with the Manchester United defender's habit of scoring own goals. The analogy resonated far beyond Ghana's borders. Following the NDC's return to power in January 2025, Adongo was appointed Chairperson of the Finance Committee, elevating him from parliamentary critic to one of the principal architects of legislative oversight over the Mahama administration's economic programme. His transition from opposition economist to finance committee chair marks the most significant shift in his public career to date.
