On 2 July 2010, in the dying seconds of extra time in Johannesburg, Asamoah Gyan had a penalty. Uruguay's Luis Suarez had just been sent off for a deliberate handball on the line. A goal would have sent Ghana to the first World Cup semi-final any African nation had ever reached. Gyan struck the crossbar. Ghana lost on penalties. The moment has followed his name ever since. It is the last thing this article will mention. Everything that comes before it is bigger.
The youngest, the record holder
Asamoah Gyan was born on 22 November 1985 in Accra. He started his senior career at Liberty Professionals and, at just 17 years and 362 days, became the youngest player to score for Ghana's senior national team. He would go on to score 51 international goals, surpassing Abedi Pele's record to become Ghana's all-time leading scorer. No Ghanaian footballer has come close to matching that number before or since.
Europe and the UAE
His club career took him from Accra to Udinese in Italy, then to Rennes in France, then to Sunderland in the Premier League, where he broke the club's transfer record. At each level, he produced. He was not a fringe player accumulating appearances; he was a striker who scored wherever he played. The most extraordinary single season came at Al Ain in the UAE, where he scored 44 goals in one campaign and won the Golden Boot in the UAE Pro League.
2006 and the captain's armband
Ghana's first-ever World Cup appearance came in 2006 in Germany. Gyan was part of a squad that reached the round of 16, a result that announced the country to a global football audience that had not been paying close attention before. He wore the captain's armband in the later years of his international career and was involved in four Africa Cup of Nations campaigns before announcing his retirement in June 2023 after more than two decades as a professional.
The crossbar from Johannesburg will follow his name in every retrospective. That is unavoidable. On the other side of it sits a record of goals and contributions that no Ghanaian footballer has matched. The penalty is part of the story. The 51 goals are a larger part.
