Asamoah Gyan

Asamoah Gyan is the greatest goalscorer Ghana has ever produced, the striker whose goals carried the Black Stars through their finest years on the world stage. Known as Baby Jet, he combined power, pace and a showman's flair into a career that made him a national icon.

Early life and rise

He was born in Accra on 22 November 1985 and made his senior international debut at seventeen in 2003, scoring against Somalia. He began his club career with Liberty Professionals before moving to Italy with Udinese and Modena.

Club career

His career took him across Europe and beyond, from Rennes in France to Sunderland in 2010, where he broke the club's transfer record. In 2011 he moved to Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates, where he was prolific, once scoring 24 goals in 27 matches and becoming the league's dominant striker.

World Cup icon

It was in the national colours that Gyan wrote his name into history. He scored Ghana's first ever World Cup goal in 2006, and his extra-time winner against the United States in 2010 remains one of the most famous moments in African football. With six World Cup goals he is the leading African scorer in the tournament's history, and with 51 goals he is comfortably Ghana's all-time top scorer.

Legacy

He represented Ghana at the 2006, 2010 and 2014 World Cups before retiring in 2023. More than his numbers, Gyan gave Ghanaian football its most unforgettable highs, and remains the benchmark every Black Stars striker is measured against.
