Gregory Bortey Promise Newman was born on 16 August 1995 in Nungua, a coastal community on the eastern edge of Accra. His father's record collection ran wide: reggae next to R&B next to Ghanaian highlife, all of it playing constantly. That early listening is audible in every record King Promise makes. He does not sound like any one genre because he was never raised on just one.
Thank God and the introduction
He arrived in the Ghanaian music conversation in 2016 with 'Thank God,' featuring Fuse ODG and produced by Killbeatz. The track announced a voice that was warm and unhurried, qualities that stood out in a scene trending toward urgency. A 2017 collaboration with Sarkodie on 'Double Trouble' gave him his first sustained radio presence, the kind of co-sign that confirms an emerging career rather than just suggesting one. He was building carefully, and it showed.
As Promised
His debut album As Promised arrived in 2019 and delivered on everything the singles had implied. Songs including 'Crazylove,' 'Tokyo' and 'Selfish' became fixtures at parties and on streaming platforms across West Africa. He worked with major names throughout the record while sounding consistently like himself, a balance that many artists at his level handle poorly. He handled it well.
Terminator and 5 Star
'Terminator' spent more than ten weeks at number one on the Afrobeats charts in 2023, extending his reach well beyond Ghana. His album 5 Star won Album of the Year at the VGMAs in 2023. He was 27. The musician who grew up listening to his father's eclectic record collection in Nungua had turned those influences into one of the most recognisable sounds in contemporary Afropop.
