Before the television stations and the radio networks and the food company and the valuation that puts him at the top of lists of Ghana's wealthiest individuals, Osei Kwame Despite sold cassette tapes. He started in Kumasi, working in music retail at a scale that gave no early indication of where it was heading. What distinguished him was not ambition described in interviews but decisions made consistently over decades, each one compounding the last, until the result was the Despite Group of Companies, which now shapes what millions of Ghanaians read, watch and listen to every day.
Peace FM and the media empire
Despite Media is the core of the business. Peace FM became one of Ghana's most listened-to radio stations, drawing the kind of audience that advertisers need and politicians take seriously. UTV extended the reach into television. OK FM and Okay FM followed. The strategy across all of them was consistent: Ghanaian-language programming that spoke to audiences the English-language media had not prioritised. In a country where most of the population communicates daily in Twi, Ga and other local languages, that positioning was not just culturally appropriate. It was commercially decisive.
Beyond media
Neat Foods, the Despite Group's food and beverage arm, moved him into a second major industry. The snack and drinks lines it produces are distributed across Ghana, adding a manufacturing dimension to a portfolio that had previously been concentrated in media. That diversification reflects the pattern that has characterised his whole career: finding adjacencies and building into them rather than staying inside a single sector until competitors consolidate around the opportunity.
Philanthropy and legacy
His philanthropic activity, which includes support for education and community development projects across Ghana, has run alongside the business building rather than after it. The Despite Foundation operates as the formal vehicle for those contributions. What he has built is one of the most instructive case studies Ghanaian business has produced: a self-made media and consumer goods empire that started with cassettes and arrived at a billion-dollar valuation through four decades of compounding decisions. The cassettes were the beginning. The empire is the result.
