Ghana's Speakers of Parliament Since 1993

The Speaker is the most senior officer of Ghana's Parliament: the person who runs debates, rules on procedure and, under the Constitution, is next in line to the presidency after the Vice-President. Seven people have held the chair since the Fourth Republic began in January 1993.

The Speakers

• Justice Daniel Francis Annan (1993 to 2001). A senior judge who presided over the first two parliaments of the Fourth Republic.
• Peter Ala Adjetey (2001 to 2005). A lawyer and former president of the Ghana Bar Association, elected Speaker after the NPP came to power.
• Ebenezer Sekyi-Hughes (2005 to 2009). Speaker of the Fourth Parliament, during President Kufuor's second term.
• Joyce Bamford-Addo (2009 to 2013). A former Supreme Court judge and the first woman to become Speaker of Ghana's Parliament.
• Edward Doe Adjaho (2013 to 2017). The first Speaker elected from among sitting MPs. He gave up the Avenor-Ave seat he had held for twenty years to take the chair.
• Aaron Mike Oquaye (2017 to 2021). A political scientist, former MP for Dome-Kwabenya and former minister.
• Alban Bagbin (2021 to date). Elected in January 2021 to preside over a Parliament split almost evenly between the two main parties, and re-elected unopposed in January 2025.

The deputies

Each Parliament also elects a First and a Second Deputy Speaker, who must come from different parties. The post has become a launchpad and a reward for long-serving MPs:
