About Abu Trica

Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, is a Ghanaian socialite and businessman from Agona Swedru in the Central Region. He became one of the most followed legal stories in Ghana after the United States charged him over an alleged romance fraud scheme that prosecutors say took more than US$8 million from elderly Americans. He denies the allegations and is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

Arrest in Ghana

US prosecutors in the Northern District of Ohio charged him with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering, alleging that the scheme used fake online identities, including ones generated with artificial intelligence, to deceive victims. He was arrested in Accra on 11 December 2025 in a joint operation by Ghanaian authorities and the FBI, and was arraigned and remanded by a district court.

In April 2026, after about four months in custody, the High Court in Accra granted him bail of GH₵30 million with two sureties. He was later re-arrested by the Narcotics Control Commission over separate investigations.

Extradition

On 2 July 2026 the High Court in Accra affirmed an order for his surrender to the United States, and he was flown out on 9 July 2026. His lawyer, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, accused the government of extraditing him before the court had finished hearing his challenge. On 10 July he appeared before Judge John R. Adams of the US District Court for the Northern District of Ohio and pleaded not guilty. The US Department of Justice said he could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

US court case

Prosecutors allege that the scheme ran from April 2023 to late 2025. After his not-guilty plea in July 2026, the court initially fixed a pre-trial conference for 25 August and a jury trial for 8 September 2026. In August he changed his defence team, hiring the Cleveland attorneys Eric F. Long and Lucas D. Trott. The judge then declared the case complex, giving both sides more time to prepare, and Kumi waived his right to a speedy trial, so the September trial date was dropped. No new trial date or plea deadline was set. He remains in custody, and the next status conference is scheduled for 3 November 2026.
