About Ama Ata Aidoo

Ama Ata Aidoo was one of Africa's most important literary voices, a playwright, novelist and poet whose work placed African women at the centre of the continent's modern story. Across six decades she wrote with a clarity and moral force that made her a towering figure in world literature.

Early life

She was born on 23 March 1942 in Abeadzi Kyiakor, in the Central Region. She came of age in the years around Ghanaian independence, and that sense of a nation and continent remaking themselves ran through everything she wrote.

A pioneering body of work

Her 1965 play The Dilemma of a Ghost made her the first published female African dramatist, a landmark in the continent's literature. She followed it with the novel Our Sister Killjoy, the short-story collection No Sweetness Here and the acclaimed novel Changes, which won a Commonwealth Writers' Prize. Her writing consistently examined the paradoxes of modern African identity, especially for women.

Public service and advocacy

She served as Ghana's Minister of Education in the early 1980s, and later founded the Mbaasem Foundation to support the work of African women writers. She taught at universities across Africa and the United States, mentoring generations of writers.

Legacy

She died in Accra on 31 May 2023, at the age of 81. Ama Ata Aidoo leaves a body of work that helped define African feminism and letters, and a reputation as one of the most influential writers the continent has produced.
