About Charles Gyamfi
Charles Kumi Gyamfi was a Ghanaian footballer and coach. As a player he became the first African to play in Germany when he joined Fortuna Düsseldorf in 1960. As a coach he led Ghana to three Africa Cup of Nations titles, in 1963, 1965 and 1982, a record later equalled by Egypt's Hassan Shehata.
Early life and playing career
He was born on 4 December 1929 and went to primary school at the Accra Royal School in James Town. After starring in Ghanaian football he moved to West Germany in 1960, signing for Fortuna Düsseldorf.
Coach
He won Ghana's first Africa Cup of Nations on home soil in 1963 and retained the title in Tunisia in 1965. He also coached Ghana at its first Olympic Games, in Tokyo in 1964, and returned for the 1972 Olympic tournament. In 1982, in Libya, he won a third Africa Cup of Nations.
Later life
He served on FIFA's Technical Study Group at the 1999 and 2001 World Youth Championships. In 2008 he complained publicly that modern players cared more about money than love of the game. He died on 2 September 2015, aged 85.
