Matthew Amoah
Former Footballer (Striker)
About Matthew Amoah
Matthew Amoah left Tema for Vitesse Arnhem at 16 and became a fan favourite there, scoring 62 goals in 174 games. For Ghana he scored 12 times in 45 internationals between 2002 and 2011.
Netherlands
He was born in Tema on 24 October 1980, one of four brothers, and learned the game on the streets. At 15, playing for Great Ambassadors at an international youth tournament, he caught the eye of Vitesse scouts, and he moved in 1996. Because he never played top-flight football at home he was little known in Ghana for years. A loan to Fortuna Sittard under Bert van Marwijk gave him regular games, and back at Vitesse under Ronald Koeman he scored 15 goals in 2002-03 and was voted the supporters' player of the season.
Dortmund and Breda
Van Marwijk took him to Borussia Dortmund in December 2005, but in 18 months he played 17 times without scoring. He returned to the Eredivisie with NAC Breda on a three-year deal in July 2007 and became a key part of their attack.
