Samuel Kuffour

Samuel Osei Kuffour won more at club level than almost any Ghanaian footballer before or since. A tough central defender born in Kumasi in 1976, he built his career at Bayern Munich, where he spent more than a decade as a fixture of one of Europe's biggest clubs.

His crowning night came in 2001, when Bayern won the Champions League; the image of him weeping on the pitch afterwards became one of the enduring pictures of Ghanaian football. He collected a stack of Bundesliga titles alongside it, a haul few African defenders have matched.

For the Black Stars he was a dependable presence for years. Since retiring he has stayed close to the game and to Ghanaian football's public life, remembered as one of the most decorated players the country has produced.
