Tony Yeboah

Anthony "Tony" Yeboah is a Ghanaian former striker who was twice the top scorer in the German Bundesliga and who scored two of the most replayed goals of the early Premier League for Leeds United. Born in Kumasi on 6 June 1966, he played club football from 1981 to 2002 and won 59 caps for Ghana.

Kotoko, Cornerstones and Okwawu

Yeboah came through at Asante Kotoko between 1981 and 1983, the years in which Kotoko won three league titles and the 1983 African Cup of Champions Clubs. He then moved to Kumasi Cornerstones and, in 1986, to Okwawu United, where he was the Ghana league's top scorer in 1986 and 1987.

Germany

In 1988 he joined 1. FC Saarbrücken in the German second tier and scored 26 goals in 65 league games. Eintracht Frankfurt signed him in 1990. Over five seasons he scored 68 Bundesliga goals in 123 games and finished as the league's top scorer in 1992-93 and 1993-94, making the kicker team of the season both years. He came third in the 1992 African Footballer of the Year vote, second in 1993, and ninth in FIFA's 1993 World Player ranking. Yeboah had entered Germany with a passport giving his birth year as 1964; this was later corrected to 1966.

Leeds United

Leeds bought him in January 1995. He scored 12 goals in 21 league games that spring, including a hat-trick against Ipswich Town on 5 April. In 1995-96 he produced a volley against Liverpool at Elland Road and a goal at Wimbledon that won BBC Goal of the Month in successive months, September and October 1995. The Wimbledon strike was named Goal of the Season, and supporters voted him Leeds' Player of the Year for 1996. He scored 32 goals in 66 games for the club in all competitions.

Hamburg and Qatar

Yeboah returned to Germany with Hamburger SV in 1997 and scored 28 league goals in 100 games over four seasons. He finished his career at Al-Ittihad in Qatar in 2001-02.

Black Stars

He played at three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments in the 1990s, including the 1992 final that Ghana lost on penalties to Ivory Coast. Accounts of his international goal tally differ: 29 in 59 caps is the figure most often quoted, while the statistics site RSSSF credits him with 15 in 56. He was Ghana Footballer of the Year in 1997.

After football

Yeboah ran a sports agency, Anthony Yeboah Sportpromotion, with his cousin Michael Osei, and built the Yegoala hotels in Accra and Kumasi. In November 2008 he became chairman of Berekum Chelsea after the club's promotion to the Premier League. He is married with two children. His nephews Kelvin Yeboah and Obed Yeboah are professional footballers; Kelvin, a Minnesota United striker, declared himself available for Ghana ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
