Otto Addo

Otto Addo coached Ghana twice and in 2025 took the Black Stars to the 2026 World Cup, winning qualifying Group I with 25 points. On 31 March 2026, about 72 days before the tournament, the Ghana Football Association dismissed him after a 2-1 friendly loss to Germany in Stuttgart.

Hamburg start

Nana Otto Addo was born on 9 June 1975 in Hamburg to Ghanaian parents and holds German citizenship as well. He came through Hamburg clubs including Hamburger SV, Bramfelder SV and VfL 93 Hamburg.

Playing days

At Hannover 96 from 1996 he was part of the side that won promotion to the 2. Bundesliga in 1998. Borussia Dortmund signed him in 1999, and he won the Bundesliga with them in 2002 and played in that year's UEFA Cup final, which Feyenoord won 3-2. Knee injuries hit him hard: he tore cruciate ligaments three times between 2001 and 2003. For Ghana he played at the 2006 World Cup.

Coaching

After retiring he moved into coaching and later worked at Dortmund as a talent coach. He first led Ghana at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and returned as head coach in March 2024. His second spell brought 8 wins and 9 defeats in 22 games, and Ghana missed the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations before the World Cup qualification run.
