Twene Jonas

Twene Jonas is a Ghanaian social media activist who lives in the United States. His videos, often filmed on the streets of New York, compare American roads and services with conditions at home and attack Ghanaian and African leaders over corruption and poor governance. His catchphrase "the system is working" became a meme across Ghana.

Kumasi roots

He was born in Kumasi on 16 June 1991. His parents, Agya Frank Twene and Awura Ama Akye, are both from Kumasi.

Film and music

Before his fame online he ran Royal Jonas Film Label. Between 2016 and 2017 the company produced 25 to 30 Kumawood films, including Anibre Nti, Abato Mu Nsem and Oman Panyin Saman. The label also manages the rappers SayDaDon and Ron Suno, and Twene has released songs such as "The System Is Working 24/7" and "Glass Nkoaa".

Controversy

His language toward politicians and traditional leaders has drawn strong reactions. A chief representing Asante people in New York declared him "wanted" over remarks seen as insulting the Asantehene, and some Ghanaian chiefs have taken legal action against him for defamation. Supporters see him as a voice for frustrated young Ghanaians, while critics accuse him of disrespect. He has also posted about doing delivery work in the US, which he defended against online mockery.
