Bernard Avle

Bernard Avle is the long-time host of The Citi Breakfast Show on Citi FM. The programme won Interactive Show of the Year at the BBC Africa Radio Awards in 2007, and on 3 April 2017 he fronted the station's #StopGalamseyNow campaign against illegal mining.

Early life and education

Bernard Koku Avle was born on 20 May 1981. He attended the University of Ghana Primary School and Presbyterian Boys' Secondary School (PRESEC), graduated in economics with distinction from the University of Ghana and later earned an MBA in marketing at Warwick Business School as a Chevening scholar.

Citi FM and Channel One

He is General Manager of Citi FM and Channel One TV, part of Omni Media, and also presents Point of View on Channel One and EdTech Mondays, a programme run with the Mastercard Foundation and MEST. The Citi Breakfast Show was named radio programme of the year by the Chartered Institute of Marketing Ghana in 2013 and 2015 and best radio morning show by the Ghana Journalists Association. The GJA also named Avle its Journalist of the Year for 2017, and the Ghana Mining Awards recognised the galamsey campaign. He founded the media training initiative iJourno Africa.

In June 2026 he gave the graduation keynote at Academic City University in Accra, telling graduates to apply what they had learned to real problems.

Family

He married Justine Avle in 2011. She died in 2022.
