About Mahama Abukari Gariba II
Ya-Na Abukari II, overlord of the Dagbon kingdom, died in Yendi on 12 July 2026, aged about 87. His enskinment in January 2019 ended 16 years without a Ya-Na after the long Dagbon chieftaincy dispute.
Life
Born Mahama Abukari Gariba at Mion, he was a son of Ya-Na Mahama II, who reigned from 1938 to 1948. Before ascending the Yendi skin he was chief of Savelugu. The kingmakers selected him as the 41st Ya-Na on 18 January 2019, and he was enskinned on 25 January 2019.
Reign and death
His reign was credited with restoring peace and reconciliation in Dagbon. On his death President Mahama called him a statesman among traditional rulers and pledged state support for the final funeral rites, while the National House of Chiefs described his passing as a monumental loss. Dagbon chiefs informed national leaders of arrangements to install a regent.
