About David Adjaye

Sir David Adjaye OM OBE is a Ghanaian-British architect whose buildings have reshaped how the world thinks about architecture's relationship to identity, memory, and place. Born on 22 September 1966 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to a Ghanaian diplomat father, Adjaye spent his formative years moving across East Africa, the Middle East, and Europe, an itinerant upbringing that instilled in him an acute sensitivity to how buildings carry cultural meaning across radically different contexts. Adjaye completed his undergraduate degree in architecture at London South Bank University in 1990, then earned his master's at the Royal College of Art, where he won the RIBA Bronze Medal. Before the RCA, he spent time working with the celebrated Portuguese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura and undertook a formative study trip to Japan. He worked at Chassay Architects and David Chipperfield Architects before a six-year partnership with William Russell. By the time he founded Adjaye Associates in 2000 he had already secured a contract to redesign the offices of the UK's Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment. Adjaye Associates, now operating from studios in London, New York, and Accra, has amassed a body of work that spans continents and typologies. Early residential commissions for artists including Chris Ofili and the Dirty House in Shoreditch established his reputation in London. The Nobel Peace Center in Oslo opened in 2005 and brought international recognition. The Moscow School of Management Skolkovo extended his reach into institutional design. The Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington DC, opened in 2016, stands as the defining commission of his career. The building's bronze-toned corona, referencing Yoruba architectural forms and the ironwork of enslaved African Americans, became one of the most visited museums in the United States and one of the most discussed pieces of civic architecture of the century. Adjaye was appointed OBE in 2007 and received a knighthood in 2017. In 2021 he was awarded the RIBA Royal Gold Medal, the highest honour in British architecture. The following year he was appointed to the Order of Merit. Despite his global footprint, Adjaye has maintained a close connection to Ghana, opening his Accra studio and consistently arguing that architecture rooted in African histories deserves a place at the centre of the global canon rather than its margins.
