Joseph Amoah

Joseph Amoah holds Ghana's 200 metres record of 20.08 seconds, which broke Emmanuel Tuffour's old mark, and won 200 metres gold at the 2023 African Games. His 100 metres best is 9.94.

Prempeh to Coppin State

Joseph Paul Amoah was born on 12 January 1997 in Greater Accra. His parents are Alberta Antwi and Thomas Amoah, and from middle school was raised by his uncle, Dr Victor Antwi. A footballer as a boy, he took up sprinting at Prempeh College in Kumasi, and at 19 ran 10.08 at Ghana's Fastest Human in 2016. He nearly gave up the sport on entering KNUST, but the university coach persuaded him to keep going. In 2017 he moved to Coppin State University in Baltimore.

Results

In May 2019 his 20.20 at the MEAC championships meant he was the first Ghanaian athlete, in any discipline, to book a place at the Tokyo Games. A month later at the NCAA championships he ran 10.01 and 20.08. That year he ran at the World Championships and won relay gold at the African Games. He took 200 metres bronze at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, 200 metres gold and relay silver at the 2023 African Games, and relay bronze at the 2026 African Championships.
