He was born Michael Elliot Kwabena Okyere Darko around 1976 in Obo Kwahu, the son of a chorister. He had once hoped to become a lawyer, but his mother's death changed his path, and the musical influence she had given him drew him toward performance, first singing gospel in a school quartet.
