Ohemaa Mercy

Ohemaa Mercy is one of the most enduring and influential figures in Ghanaian gospel music, a contemporary worship singer whose blend of traditional rhythm and modern gospel has made her a household name for two decades, and whose annual worship event has become a national institution.

Early life

She was born Mercy Amoah on 7 September 1977 in Weija, Accra, to Fante parents, and spent much of her early life in Koforidua. She trained as a teacher, earning her certificate at a training college, before music became her calling.

Career

Her 2004 debut album Adamfo Papa launched her to fame almost immediately, its blend of Ghanaian rhythms and contemporary gospel appealing across generations. She built on it with a string of albums that established her as one of the leading gospel voices in the country.

Awards and ministry

At the 2008 Ghana Music Awards she swept Gospel Artiste of the Year, Album of the Year and Gospel Album of the Year, and that same year received a national honour from President Kufuor. Through Ohemaa Mercy Ministries she founded the Tehillah Experience, an annual worship gathering that has grown into one of Ghana's largest gospel events.
