Ohemaa Mercy

Mercy Amoah, known as Ohemaa Mercy, is a Ghanaian contemporary gospel singer. Her second album, Edin Jesus, was the best-selling album of its year and won her three Ghana Music Awards in 2008, and the same year President John Kufuor awarded her the Grand Medal at the National Honours.

Early life and education

She was born in Weija, Accra, to Fante parents from Abakrampa and Elmina, and spent most of her youth in Koforidua. She attended St. Peter's Anglican Primary School and Ghana Senior High School in Koforidua, then trained as a teacher at the SDA Teacher Training College in Asokore, earning her Teacher's Certificate 'A'.

Career

Her first album, Adamfo Papa, came out in late November 2004 and brought her to national attention. It earned seven nominations at the 2006 Ghana Music Awards, though no wins, and she was named Discovery of the Year at the Gospel Music Awards the same year.

Edin Jesus followed in 2007 and sold 875,000 copies within six months. It earned ten nominations at the 2008 Ghana Music Awards, the most in the scheme's history at the time, and she won Gospel Artiste of the Year, Album of the Year and Gospel Album of the Year. Her third album, Wobeye Kese (2010 to 2011), was again among the best-selling records in the country.

Her best-known songs include "Aseda", "We Praise Your Name", "Yesu Mogya", "Woafiri Mu", "Ɔbɛyɛ Ama Wo" and "Biribi Bɛsi". "Ote Me Mu", with MOG Music, won Gospel Song of the Year at the Ghana Music Awards and at the 3Music Awards.
