Okyeame Kwame

Okyeame Kwame is one of the most cerebral and enduring figures in Ghanaian hiplife, a rapper, songwriter and creative entrepreneur known as the Rap Doctor for the precision of his lyricism. Across three decades he has stayed relevant by continually reinventing himself.

Early life

He was born Kwame Nsiah-Apau on 17 April 1976 in Kumasi, the third of six siblings. He took to rap young, writing and performing while still at Anglican Senior High School in Kumasi.

Akyeame and solo career

He first found fame in 1997 as one half of the hiplife duo Akyeame, alongside Okyeame Kofi, recording a string of albums including Nyansapo and Nkonsonkonson that helped shape the genre in its early years. When the duo parted in 2004, he launched a solo career under his own label, One Mic Entertainment.

Recognition

His solo work confirmed his standing, and in 2009 he was crowned Artist of the Year at the Ghana Music Awards, the industry's highest honour. Known for weaving proverb and wordplay into polished, radio-friendly songs, he became one of the most respected lyricists in the country.

Beyond music

Okyeame Kwame has extended his career into branding, marketing and advocacy, working on health and social campaigns and positioning himself as a creative entrepreneur as much as a musician. His longevity and reinvention have made him one of Ghanaian music's most respected elder statesmen.
