About Pat Thomas
Pat Thomas, "the Golden Voice of Africa", began singing highlife with Ebo Taylor in the 1960s. In 2015 he marked fifty years in music with an album recorded with the Kwashibu Area Band.
Background
He was born Nana Kwabena Amo Mensah in Asante Agona, Ashanti Region, on 14 August 1946. His father taught music theory and his mother led a band. He sings in Fante.
Career
In 1974 he formed the band Sweet Beans and recorded his first album, False Lover, followed by Pat Thomas Introduces Marijata. After the 1979 coup he moved to Berlin and later to Canada. His later releases on K7 Music include Pat Thomas & Kwashibu Area Band (2015), which AllMusic listed among its favourite world albums of the year, Coming Home (2016) and Obiaa! (2019). He received a VGMA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012 and was named Best Male Vocalist at the 2016 VGMAs for "Bra".
