Preachers
Gospel Group
About Preachers
Preachers helped bring urban gospel and gospel rap into the Ghanaian mainstream. Their song "Go Hard" won Discovery of the Year at the 2012 Ghana Gospel Music Awards.
How they began
The group formed in 2009 with five members: Michelle Majid-Michel, Dennis Enim, Obed Awelinga-Nzuh (Obed Psych), Edmund Baidoo and Emmanuel Awuni (Emani Beats). The name comes from Mark 16:15, "Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel". Their first mixtape, Very Special (2010), was produced mostly by KODA.
Breakthrough
Michelle left to concentrate on her studies, and the other four released the album Mark 16:15 in 2012. "Go Hard" topped local charts, took a rap song prize at the Christian Community Music Awards in 2013, and its video featured on the US site Rapzilla. Dennis left quietly in 2013, and the group has since been a trio of Obed Psych, Emani Beats and Edmund Baidoo. A UK-based gospel awards scheme later honoured them as its Afro rap act of the year, and their fan club is called Team Bibles Up.
