Yvonne Nelson

Yvonne Nelson has spent her career proving she is more than the roles that made her famous. She is one of Ghana's best-known actresses, but she is also a producer, an entrepreneur, an activist and, since 2023, a best-selling author, a range that has made her one of the most talked-about figures in Ghanaian public life.

Early life

She was born in Accra on 12 November 1985, of Fante and Ga heritage. She began acting around 2000, working her way through the Ghanaian film scene before the role that changed her standing arrived with Princess Tyra, which turned her into a leading name in Ghallywood.

Acting career

Through the 2000s and 2010s Nelson built a filmography that kept her among the industry's top draws, with titles including House of Gold, Any Other Monday, In April and Playboy. Her on-screen presence, poised and often headstrong, made her a natural fit for the strong-woman leads that came to define much of her work.

Producer and entrepreneur

In 2011 she moved behind the camera, launching her production career with The Price and following it with Single and Married and House of Gold under her banner, YN Productions. Away from film she has built a set of businesses that carry her initials, among them the YN's Closet fashion line and YN Hairline, and in July 2024 she opened the Yvonne Nelson International School in East Legon Hills, adding to a day-care venture and real-estate investments.

Activism

In 2015 she stepped into a role few Ghanaian celebrities are willing to take, organising the 'Dumsor Must Stop' vigil against the country's punishing power crisis. The celebrity-backed protest drew national attention and political pushback in equal measure, and cemented her reputation as a star willing to spend her fame on a cause.

Memoir

On 18 June 2023 she released a memoir, I Am Not Yvonne Nelson, that became one of the most discussed books in recent Ghanaian celebrity culture. Candid about her upbringing, her relationships and the industry, it climbed the Amazon best-seller charts within a day of release and kept the country talking for weeks.

Personal life

Nelson gave birth to her daughter, Ryn Roberts, in 2017, and has spoken openly about single motherhood in a way that resonated with many Ghanaian women. Her net worth is estimated at around a million dollars, drawn from acting, production and her businesses. More than two decades into her career, she remains as likely to make headlines for her convictions as for her roles.
