Andrew Owusu

Andrew Owusu's triple jump of 17.23 metres, set in Dakar in August 1998, is still the Ghanaian record. He went to three Olympic Games and later became a professor of public health in the United States.

Jumper

He was born on 8 July 1972 and attended PRESEC Legon. At the University of Alabama he was an eight-time All-American, set school records in the indoor long jump and outdoor triple jump and won the 1996 NCAA indoor long jump title. He represented Ghana at the Olympics in Atlanta (1996), Sydney (2000) and Athens (2004). His long jump best of 8.12 metres, from Finland in June 1995, was the national record until 2003.

Professor

He earned his doctorate at Middle Tennessee State University in 2004 and is now a full professor of public health there, as well as a volunteer jumps coach on the track team. From 2006 to 2020 he coordinated Ghana's school-based student health surveillance system, run with the WHO, the US Centers for Disease Control and the Ghana Education Service.
