About Dr. Abiba Zakariah
Dr Abiba Zakariah heads Ghana's National Insurance Commission. President Mahama appointed her acting Commissioner of Insurance in February 2025.
Insurance career
She was managing director of Ghana Re and later chief operating officer of WAICA Reinsurance Corporation. She founded the management consultancy The Strategist Consortium and has been an executive of the risk firm Alternative Risk Advisors. She has served on several boards.
Qualifications
She holds a doctorate in management from the Swiss Management Centre, a master's in marketing from the University of Ghana and a law degree. She is a fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute and of the Institute of Risk Management Professionals Ghana, and a chartered marketer.
Recognition
She was the first president of the Chartered Insurance Ladies Association of Ghana, received a Top 50 Women in Insurance in Africa award in 2022, and was named among Avance Media's top 100 women board directors in Ghana in 2026. She should not be confused with Abibata Shanni Mahama Zakariah, the former MASLOC chief executive.
