Emelia Brobbey

Emelia Brobbey was a teacher before she was an actress. After training at Presbyterian Training College she was posted to Obuasi to teach agricultural science, and it was there that she was introduced to acting.

Roots

Akyem Swedru in the Eastern Region is where she grew up; she was born on 6 January 1982, the daughter of Samuel P. Brobbey. She took her O Levels at Akyem Swedru Secondary School and later added a journalism diploma, a degree in human resource management and a broadcast journalism certificate.

Film, TV and music

She became one of the leading Kumawood actresses, in films such as Asantewaa, Kae and Asem Asa, and also produces and presents on television. She was Best Indigenous Actress at the 2019 City People Entertainment Awards. Her first single, "Fa Me Ko" (2019), was widely mocked online; she said she accepted criticism of her singing but not personal insults, and released "Odo Electric" in January 2020.

Charity

In 2017 she received the Africa Gold humanitarian award, linked to a UN Economic and Social Council project, the first actor to do so. Her Emelia Brobbey Foundation supports children's homes and other causes, and in 2021 she lent her name to the national COVID-19 fundraising drive.
