Grace Omaboe

Grace Omaboe wrote scripts for Osofo Dadzie in the 1970s before she ever acted. As Maame Dokono in the GBC drama Obra and host of the children's storytelling show By the Fireside, she became one of the most familiar faces on Ghanaian television.

Background

She was born on 10 June 1946 at Nyafuman in the Birim North District and attended Abetifi Girls' Secondary School before studying theatre arts at the University of Ghana. Encouraged by Nana Bosompra, she started acting in the series Keteke, which she co-produced, and which grew into Obra with David Dontoh.

Films

Her film work runs from I Surrender (1998), Expectations and Jewels to Kwaku Ananse (2013), Children of the Mountain (2016), P over D (2019), Aloe Vera (2020), Freedom and Justice (2021), Red Carpet (2022) and Yaa (2023). She chaired the jury of the 2017 Golden Movie Awards Africa.

Politics and orphanage

She stood for the NDC in Birim North in 2000 and came second, later backed the NPP in 2008, and left politics in 2016, calling it a waste of time and money. Her Peace and Love orphanage was closed for operating without a licence; she won a court case over criminal negligence and now runs the Graceful Grace school in Accra.
