Jackie Appiah

Jackie Appiah has twice been named best leading actress at the Africa Movie Academy Awards, in 2010 for The Perfect Picture and in 2024 for Red Carpet, fourteen years apart. Few Ghanaian actors have stayed at the top of West African film for that long.

Early life

She was born on 5 December 1983 in Toronto, Canada, the youngest of five children of Kwabena Appiah. The statesman Joe Appiah was her uncle. At ten she moved to Ghana with her mother.

Career

She played Enyonam in the long-running TV series Things We Do for Love and made her film debut in Divine Love alongside Van Vicker and Majid Michel. Beyoncé: The President's Daughter (2006) won her Best Supporting Actress at the 2007 AMAAs, and she has said Mummy's Daughter (2006) is her best role. Princess Tyra (2007), The Perfect Picture (2009), Black Soul (2010), Turning Point (2012) and Cheaters (2013) made her one of the most bankable actresses in Ghana and Nigeria. Later work includes The Good Doctor (2021) and For Love and Country (2025).

Awards

Besides her two AMAA leading-actress wins, she won Best Actress at the Ghana Movie Awards in 2010 (4 Play) and 2013 (Cheaters), Best Actress in a Drama at the 2013 Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards for The Perfect Picture, and Best Ghanaian Actress at the 2010 City People Entertainment Awards.

Personal life

She married Peter Agyemang in 2005; they later divorced, and she has a son, Damien. She has endorsed brands including GSMF and UB. In 2020 she dismissed online rumours linking her to Liberia's President George Weah. In 2026 she travelled to Vietnam to support Miss Ghana Rumzia Sule at the Miss World festival.
