David Dontoh

David Dontoh is one of the most distinguished actors Ghana has produced, a veteran of stage and screen whose career spans four decades and some of the most important films in the country's history.

Early life and training

He was born David Kwame Dontoh in 1964 in Cape Coast, the son of a teacher. He responded to a newspaper advert from the National Film and Television Institute in 1980, which drew him into acting, and later studied drama and theatre at the University of Ghana's School of Performing Arts, focusing on playwriting.

A landmark filmography

He began his professional career in 1983 in Kukurantumi: Road to Accra, and went on to appear in some of the defining works of Ghanaian and international cinema, including Kwaw Ansah's classic Heritage Africa, Deadly Voyage, and the acclaimed Beasts of No Nation. He is also fondly remembered as Ghanaman in the hugely popular comedy-drama series Obra in the 1980s and 90s.

Recognition

His talent has been repeatedly honoured, with multiple best-actor awards across his career and a Ghana Peace Award, recognition of both his artistry and his standing as an elder of the profession.
