Gyedu-Blay Ambolley

Gyedu-Blay Ambolley is one of the most inventive figures in Ghanaian music, a saxophonist, singer and composer who created his own genre and, many argue, planted the seeds of hiplife decades before the term existed.

Early life

He was born on 11 July 1947 in Sekondi-Takoradi. His musical life began at eight, playing his father's flute, and by fourteen he was training formally on guitar, learning from highlife figures including Sammy Lartey and Ebo Taylor, the mentor who would shape much of his early direction.

Simigwa

His defining innovation was Simigwa, a genre he pioneered by weaving spoken, rhythmic, rap-like vocals into highlife. His 1973 record Simigwa-Do gave the style its name, and it is this fusion of talk and traditional rhythm that leads many to call him a godfather of hiplife, decades ahead of his time.

International career

He moved to the United States in the late 1980s, basing himself in New York, and toured widely across West Africa, Europe and North America. Over more than four decades he shared stages with the likes of Miriam Makeba and Fela Kuti and recorded more than thirty albums.

Standing

A restless innovator who has never stopped performing, Gyedu-Blay Ambolley is celebrated as one of the true originals of African music, a bridge between traditional highlife and the rap-inflected sounds that would later dominate Ghanaian pop.
