Kaywa

Kaywa (born David Kojo Kyei) is a Ghanaian record producer, sound engineer and founder of Highly Spiritual Music, a record label based in Tema. He has won Sound Engineer of the Year at the Ghana Music Awards several times, including in 2016.

Background

His father wanted him to become a lawyer, but he taught himself keyboard and drums and moved into music production instead. His studio in Tema became a stop for young acts; the hiplife duo Keche recorded there in their early years.

Highly Spiritual Music

He founded Highly Spiritual Music in 2017 to develop and release music by Ghanaian artists. The label signed several acts from the MTN Hitmaker talent show and put out a Highly Spiritual Music Allstars single featuring Kuami Eugene. Its roster has included Mr Drew and Lasmid, who left in 2023, and in June 2023 it introduced four new signees, Cadeen, Joevibe, Shugalord and JoyVerse, with the joint single All Day.

Kaywa was nominated for Producer of the Year at the 2019 Ghana Music Awards and the 2022 3Music Awards. He has said he was the first producer to fuse Afrobeats with gospel. He is also an ordained minister and was awarded a Doctor of Divinity by the United Apostolic Theology Seminary.
