King Bruce
Highlife Composer, Trumpeter, Bandleader
About King Bruce
King Bruce was a Ghanaian composer, arranger, trumpeter and bandleader who shaped dance-band highlife. He founded the Black Beats in 1952, helped build Ghana's musicians' unions, and in his later years trained a whole generation of bands at his home in James Town, Accra.
Early life
He was born on 3 June 1922 in James Town, Accra. At secondary school he learned Western music theory as well as songs in Twi and Ewe. His parents wanted him to join the civil service and sent him to London for two years of study, but there he learned the trumpet.
The Black Beats
Back in Accra in 1951 he joined Teacher Lamptey's Accra Orchestra, and the next year he co-founded the Black Beats. The name expressed loyalty to African rhythm, and the band blended highlife with American swing, with a strong vocal line-up. In 1961 nine members left to form the Ramblers, and he rebuilt the band with young musicians such as the trumpeter Anthony Foley. He ran the Black Beats alongside a civil service career until about 1967, when he had to choose and handed over the leadership.
Unions and teaching
In the 1970s he helped organise three musicians' unions, most importantly the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), founded in 1974. He retired from the civil service in 1977 and returned to music. His house in James Town became the base for as many as seven bands, which he guided and taught.
Death
He died on 12 September 1997, leaving many protégés. The music writers John Collins and Banning Eyre documented his life.
