Kofi Kinaata

Kofi Kinaata is Ghana's Fante Rap God, a songwriter whose gift for storytelling has made him one of the most respected lyricists of his era. Where many chase hooks, he builds songs around wit, proverb and social observation, and audiences have rewarded him for it.

Early life

He was born Martin King Arthur on 15 April 1990 and raised in Effiakuma, a working-class town in Takoradi in the Western Region. He attended Takoradi Technical Institute, and the streets of his hometown, which he name-checks often, run through much of his writing.

Rise

He first drew notice in 2009 as a runner-up in the Kasahari rap competition on Melody FM. In 2013 he joined Samini's High Grade Family, where mentorship helped turn a sharp local talent into a national name. His single Made in Taadi and the widely loved Confession established his reputation.

Songwriting and style

Kinaata is celebrated for his lyrical dexterity, unusual rhyme schemes and a humorous, proverb-laden style rooted in the Fante language.
