Koo Kumi

Koo Kumi turned Accra's trotros into a stage. His Trotro Vibes movement puts poets and acoustic musicians on public buses to perform for passengers, and BBC Africa filmed it in December 2016.

Roots

William Du Bois Yaw Sakyi Kumi was born on 5 May 1994, the eldest of four children, and comes from Mampong Akuapem. He studied visual arts at St Paul's in Kwahu and Mampong Presbyterian Senior High, then journalism at the Ghana Institute of Journalism (2018) and a master's in brands and communication at UPSA. He is also a traditional leader, Nana Yaw Sakyi I, Apesemakahene of Abotakyi in Akuapem.

Poetry

He won Ghana's first teen poetry slam in 2013 and writes in a mix of Twi and English, often over hip-hop and traditional sounds. His releases are Woke on the Mountain (2019), An Ode to a New Moon (2020) and the album The Griot. He has performed at the National Theatre, the Alliance Francaise and the British Council and worked with Okyeame Kwame, Wanlov the Kubolor and Ko-Jo Cue.
