About Kobi Onyame
Kobi Onyame, born Kwame Barfour-Osei on 3 July 1982, is an independent hip hop artist, producer and songwriter based in the United Kingdom. His albums Gold and Don't Drink the Poison were shortlisted for the Scottish Album of the Year Award in 2018 and 2022.
Life
He was born in Ghana and grew up in Accra, then moved to London and later to Glasgow for a master's degree at the University of Strathclyde. Early in his career he recorded as Jae P (also JPE), including on the Haatsville Project with Jayso.
Career
His music mixes Ghanaian influences with contemporary hip hop. After Gold was shortlisted he received PRS Foundation funding for his next record, and in 2019 Creative Scotland picked him as one of 10 Scottish acts to play The Great Escape. In 2020 he founded Chosen Artists Management. Don't Drink the Poison (2021) was self-produced, with two tracks co-produced by Jayso and Nathan Somevi, and guests including Ghana's Worlasi.
