Nana Ama McBrown

Nana Ama McBrown could not sit the Basic Education Certificate Examination after dropping out of junior high school in Kumasi. A radio audition for Miracle Films led to her first film, That Day, in 2001, and she became one of the best-known actresses and TV hosts in Ghana.

Early life

She was born Felicity Ama Agyemang on 15 August 1977 in Kumasi, to Cecilia Agyenim Boateng and Kwabena Nkrumah. After her parents divorced, she and six siblings were raised by her aunt, Betty Obiri Yeboah, and Kofi McBrown, whose name she took, in Kwadaso. She attended several private schools and Kwadaso L/A JSS, and later earned a secretarial certificate.

Film

She became a Kumawood star in comedies and dramas such as Kumasi Yonko (2002), Madam Joan (2004) and Asoreba (2007), often alongside Agya Koo and Mercy Asiedu. Later films include Agya Koo Trotro Driver (2012), I Do (2015), SideChic Gang (2018), Coming to Africa (2020) and Asantewaa: Battle for the Golden Stool (2022). She won four awards at the 2011 Kumawood Awards, including Best Actress in a Leading Role, and Favourite Actress at the 2016 Ghana Movie Awards.

Television

She hosted The McBrown Kitchen and the entertainment show United Showbiz on UTV until March 2023, when she moved to Media General's Onua TV to host Onua Showtime. She was named Media Personality of the Year at the Ghana Leadership Awards in November 2024. She is also one of the most in-demand brand ambassadors in Ghana, for products including Tasty Tom, Royal Drinks, Hisense and Deedew spices.

Personal life

On 30 January 2013 she fractured her hand in a car crash near Lapaz in Accra. In 2007 she was enstooled Nkosuohemaa (development queen mother) of Assin Basiako. She married Maxwell Mawu Mensah in 2016, and their daughter, Maxine, was born in Canada in February 2019. In December 2025 she announced on TV3 that they had divorced.
