Agya Koo

Agya Koo was working as a cobbler when a 1995 appearance on GTV's Key Soap Concert Party made his name. Within a decade he was the biggest comic actor in Kumawood, and in July 2008 President John Kufuor gave him a national award.

Early life

He was born Alexander Kofi Adu on 25 May 1969 and comes from the Ashanti Region; he grew up in the Asantewaa area of Accra Newtown. Before acting he worked as a shoemaker and warmed up crowds as a comedian at the National Theatre.

Films

He has appeared in well over a hundred films, mostly Twi-language comedies. They include Kumasi Yonko (2002), Black Star (2006), Evil Heart (2008), Agya Koo Trotro Driver (2012), Joni Waka (2012) with Van Vicker and Away Bus (2019), as well as Obaatanpa, Ma Tricki Wo and Three Desperate Friends. He often starred with Nana Ama McBrown and Mercy Asiedu. He runs a band and film studio called Tetemmofra and has been a brand ambassador for Ghana Exim Bank alongside Shatta Wale.

Politics

Long a public supporter of the New Patriotic Party, he announced on 15 April 2026 that he was forming a new party, the Ghana First Party, to challenge the dominance of the NPP and NDC.

Family

His first marriage, to Victoria Owusu Adomako, ended in divorce. In June 2016 he married Rita Asiedu in London. He has three children.
