Agya Koo

Agya Koo is the actor who helped build Kumawood into a national phenomenon. A comedian of boundless energy and improvisation, he became the first Ghanaian actor to feature in more than 200 films, and for a time was the biggest star the Twi-language film industry had.

Early life

He was born Alexander Kofi Adu on 25 May 1969, with roots in the Ashanti Region. Before fame he worked as a cobbler, a humble start that fed the everyman quality audiences came to love in his performances.

Kumawood stardom

He rose to prominence in the 2000s as the face of Kumasi-based, Twi-language cinema, appearing in a torrent of films including Obaatanpa, Away Bus and Ma Tricki Wo. Famous for acting without a script, he improvised his way through scenes, a style he credited to natural talent rather than method, and one that made him unmistakable on screen.

Recognition

His contribution was formally acknowledged in 2008, when President John Kufuor conferred a national award on him for his service to Ghanaian entertainment. He remains one of the most decorated and prolific figures in the country's film history.

Standing

Though the Kumawood boom he helped drive has since cooled, Agya Koo's place in it is secure. He is remembered as a pioneer who turned local-language comedy into mass entertainment and opened the door for the generation of Kumasi actors who followed.
