Ama Abebrese

Ama K. Abebrese won best actress in a leading role at the 2011 Africa Movie Academy Awards for Sinking Sands, directed by Leila Djansi. She later narrated and produced The Burial of Kojo, Blitz Bazawule's film released on Netflix.

London years

Ama Konadu Abebrese was born in Ghana on 3 May 1980 and grew up in west London. She learned television as a teenager at Youth Culture Television (YCTV), presented the BBC Two youth show Pass da Mic, and joined the Lyric Hammersmith's summer theatre company. She studied media arts and drama at St Mary's University, Twickenham. On OBE TV she hosted the chat show On The Sofa, interviewing guests from Akon to Harrison Ford, Rihanna and George Lucas.

Film and TV in Ghana

Back in Ghana she presented on Viasat 1, TV3 and EbonyLife TV and acted in Elmina, London Get Problem and Double Cross, which she also co-produced. She appeared in Netflix's Beasts of No Nation (2015) and in Azali, Ghana's first submission for the Oscar for best international feature. In February 2024 the International Organization for Migration made her a goodwill ambassador in Ghana, alongside Kofi Kinaata.
