Amaarae's "Sad Girlz Luv Money", with Moliy, blew up on TikTok and charted around the world in 2021 after a remix with Kali Uchis. Her 2025 album Black Star produced "S.M.O", which Pitchfork ranked the third-best song of that year.

Bronx, Atlanta, Accra

Ama Serwah Genfi was born in the Bronx on 4 July 1994 to Ama Bawuah and Kwadwo Boateng Genfi, the older of two children, and grew up between Atlanta, New Jersey and Accra. She wrote her first song at 13 and names Kelis as an early influence. She spent some years at Ghana International School, made mixtapes as a teenager and interned at a studio at 17. She studied English literature at Agnes Scott College, taking music business classes, and moved back to Ghana in June 2017.

Albums

Her first mixtape, In Splendid Isolation, came out when she was 17. She released the EP Passionfruit Summers on 30 November 2017 through her own label, Golden Child, and Apple Music listed her among its favourite new African artists the next spring. The Angel You Don't Know (2020) earned Pitchfork's Best New Music tag and a place at 19 on its albums of the year list. Fountain Baby followed on 9 June 2023 and Black Star in August 2025. Her music mixes pop, R&B, afrobeats and alté, and she is open about a fluid view of gender and sexuality.
