Buk Bak
Hiplife Group
About Buk Bak
Buk Bak were the first hiplife group to find real success rapping in Ga. The group's story ended in November 2013 with the death of Ronny Coaches.
Formation
The name comes from "book back". Ronny Coaches, then studying auto mechanics at Accra Technical Training College, came second with his group in an inter-school rap contest where Prince Bright and Isaac Shoetan, an Adisadel College student known as Papa Shoto, came third. Bright and Shoetan then invited Coaches to join them. They rapped in Ga, Twi and Pidgin.
Records
Signed to Abib Records, a deal they called good money, they made Komi Kɛ Kena, Awɛnsɛm and Nkomhyɛ and played shows in Ghana, the US and the UK. After Shoetan went solo, Coaches and Bright recorded 1662, Sika Korkor and Gold Coast for Agicoat Records, then split in 2006. Bright, also known as Bling Sparkles, released Light Over Darkness, with the hit "Condom", and moved to the United States; Coaches put out Screen Saver. They reunited in 2012 for "Kolom" and the album Fisherman Anthem, which turned out to be their last. Some early members later formed groups such as 4x4.
