Celestine Donkor

Celestine Donkor is one of the most celebrated gospel musicians in Ghana, a singer and songwriter whose praise anthems have crossed borders and made her one of the leading female voices in African gospel.

Early life and education

She was born Celestine Akakpo on 7 November 1981, to parents from the Volta Region. She was educated at the University of Ghana, where she earned a degree in sociology and information studies, and came into music through years of singing backing vocals for established gospel artists.

Breakthrough

She has been active since 2007, but her breakthrough came with the song Agbebolo, meaning Bread of Life, a collaboration with Nii Okai that became a hit across Africa. The song announced her as a major gospel talent and remains her signature.

Awards and ministry

She won Gospel Song of the Year at the 2021 Ghana Music Awards with Agbebolo, and was named among the Top 30 Most Influential Women in Music that same year, alongside honours at national and African gospel awards. She founded Celestial Praise, an annual gospel concert, and has collaborated with gospel artists across the continent.

Powerful of voice and prolific in output, Celestine Donkor has become one of the defining female figures in contemporary Ghanaian gospel, a worship leader whose music reaches audiences well beyond her home country.
