Darlington Akogo

Darlington Akogo is a Ghanaian artificial intelligence entrepreneur and the founder and chief executive of minoHealth AI Labs, a company that builds AI systems for healthcare. He also founded Karaagro AI, which applies the same approach to agriculture. Born on 6 December 1995, he has become one of the best known African voices on the use of AI in medicine.

Why he started

Akogo has said his interest in the field grew out of his own difficulty getting healthcare in 2013. By 2016 he was working on ways artificial intelligence could lower the barriers between patients and diagnosis. He began building his company in Europe before returning to Ghana in 2017 to grow it at home.

minoHealth and Moremi AI

minoHealth has developed AI tools for radiology, the reading of medical images such as chest X-rays, and those tools have been used in more than 50 countries. With funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Akogo started Moremi AI, a medical diagnostic assistant designed for African health systems.

Setting global standards

Akogo leads the topic group on AI for radiology within the Focus Group on Artificial Intelligence for Health run by the International Telecommunication Union and the World Health Organization. In that role he helps shape international standards and regulation for AI in medical imaging. He has spoken on AI and health at WHO and ITU events and at the Harvard African Business Conference.

Recognition

He has been named among the Global Top 100 Most Influential People of African Descent (MIPAD) in healthcare and appears on World Economic Forum platforms as a young technology leader.
